MITRE Selected as One of Glassdoor.com's 50 Best Places to Work

December 2010

For the third year in a row, The MITRE Corporation has been named to Glassdoor.com's Employee Choice List of the 50 Best Places to Work. MITRE ranked number 12 on the career and workplace site's list of the top U.S. companies. The Employees' Choice Awards rely solely on the input of employees, who provide feedback on their work environment and senior management throughout the year via an anonymous 20-question survey. The survey addresses eight key workplace factors that include work/life balance, career opportunities, communication, compensation and benefits, fairness and respect, employee morale, recognition and feedback, and senior leadership. The ranking of the top 50 list was determined by each company's overall Glassdoor rating, which is the cumulative average rating from the survey.


MITRE's Christopher J. Hegarty Named IEEE Fellow

December 2010

Christopher J. Hegarty, Director for Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Engineering & Spectrum at MITRE, has been named a 2011 IEEE Fellow. Considered one of the technical community's most prestigious honors, the IEEE's grade of Fellow recognizes "unusual distinction and significant contributions to the advancement or application of engineering, science, and technology" with significant value to society.


MITRE Employees Win National Women of Color STEM Awards

The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that six employees were recognized for their leadership and accomplishments in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields at the 15th annual National Women of Color (NWOC) STEM Conference held in Dallas, Texas from October 28-30.


MITRE's Hwang and Mullen Receive IEEE Best Paper Award

MITRE Named to Boston Globe's 2010 Top Places to Work List

The MITRE Corporation has been named one of the Top Places to Work in Massachusetts in the Boston Globe's third annual employee survey of local employers. This year MITRE was ranked second on the overall list of the best large companies (those with 1,000 or more employees). MITRE also ranked second for dedication to ethics, third in a related listing of the best companies in Massachusetts for diversity, and fourth for employee confidence in their future career prospects, according to the Globe.


MITRE's James W. Moore Honored by IEEE

MITRE Senior Principal Software Systems Engineer James W. Moore has been named the recipient of the 2011 IEEE Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award. Established in 1979, the annual award is presented by the IEEE and recognizes exceptional contributions to the development and advancement of standards in electrical and electronics engineering.


MITRE's UAT Beacon Radio Receives 2010 R&D 100 Award

The MITRE Corporation's Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) Beacon Radio has been honored with a 2010 R&D 100 Award from R&D Magazine. The technologies on R&D Magazine's list are considered the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year.


IDG's Computerworld Names MITRE a "Best Place to Work in Information Technology" for Sixth Year in a Row

This is the company's sixth straight year on the magazine's list of "100 Best Places to Work in IT." MITRE ranked number 26 overall and number 8 in the category of medium-size companies.

Richard Byrne Receives AFCEA Award for Engineering

Richard Byrne, vice president within MITRE's Center for Integrated Intelligence Systems, has received the Benjamin H. Oliver Gold Medal for Engineering. This senior-level award was presented to Byrne by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA International) on May 10 at the Joint Warfighting Conference in Virginia Beach, Va.


Alliance for Workplace Excellence Recognizes MITRE

The Alliance for Workplace Excellence (AWE) has named The MITRE Corporation a 2010 winner of the Workplace Excellence Award and the Health & Wellness Trailblazer Award. This is the eighth year in a row MITRE has received the Workplace Excellence Award and the fifth consecutive year it has won the Trailblazer Award. Both awards highlight businesses that promote professional fulfillment and personal wellness at work, at home, and in the community. Applicants undergo a rigorous assessment process led by an independent review panel. The winners demonstrate excellence in each of these categories:

  • Supportive Corporate Culture and Management Practices
  • Strong Employee Health and Wellness Initiatives
  • Comprehensive Growth and Learning Opportunities
  • Demonstrated Commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility and Employee Volunteerism

"Recognition by AWE means a great deal," said Bill Albright, director of MITRE's Quality of Work Life and Diversity division in the company's human resources organization. "We continually strive to provide employees with the tools needed to achieve work-life balance and maintain a healthy lifestyle. These goals have truly become part of MITRE's culture."

MITRE's Embrace Your Health initiative provides programs and tips to promote physical activity, good nutrition, and work-life solutions. The company also offers flexible work arrangements, telecommuting options, opportunities to volunteer, and educational assistance programs.

A nonprofit organization founded by Montgomery County, Md., and Discovery Communications, Inc., AWE helps companies in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., region become great places to work. The organization offers educational programs, information resources, consulting, mentoring, networking, and sponsors annual awards. Albright will accept both honors for MITRE at AWE's awards luncheon on June 1. More than 600 area business executives are expected to attend.

Two MITRE Employees Receive Black Engineer of the Year Awards

The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that Joel Hypolite and Charles Worrell, Ph.D., were named Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) winners at the 2010 BEYA Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Global Competitiveness Conference, held in Baltimore from February 18-20. Hypolite received a Modern Day Technology Leader Award and Worrell received a Special Recognition Award.


MITRE's William Albright Honored for Diversity Leadership

The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that William Albright, director of the Quality of Work Life and Diversity division in the company's human resources organization, has received the Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) for Diversity Leadership in Industry.
