MITRE Hosts Scout Engineering Day
Uniforms at MITRE don't usually raise eyebrows. On a recent weekend, however, the uniforms belonged to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts participating in MITRE's first Scout Engineering Day. The event provides an opportunity for scouts to earn merit badges in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines.

Local Students Introduced to Engineering at MITRE
They sat at round tables covered in bright table cloths, talking, laughing, and listening. High school students in hooded sweatshirts and letter jackets. MITRE engineers in suits and sweaters. All had one thing in common: a belief that women can make an impact through a career in engineering.

Giving Students a MITRE "Sanctuary"
It had been a busy day for high school intern Johan Mejia. Much of it had been spent aiding in the preparation of various elements associated with the new phone system on MITRE's Bedford, Mass., campus. Another task involved tracking LAN/Voice and Network media inventory. As Mejia recounted his experiences, he noted that, among other things, he's learning how to make the cables for videoconference and other network media systems at MITRE.

Students Share Nanotechnology Findings in Summer Review
Gold nanoparticles. Carbon nanotubes. Nano-enabled hybrid power systems. And those were just the morning presentations at the Nanosystems Research Group's 19th annual end-of-summer technical review. The group hires exceptional students from high schools and colleges across the country to serve as summer technical aides and to participate in cutting-edge nanotechnology research as part of the MITRE Student Program.

Mentor Helps Students Find Their Place in Space
In early 2012, for the second time in five years, students at the University of Louisiana Lafayette will have a satellite slightly larger than a Rubik's cube shot into space. Jim Dieudonne, a graduate of UL Lafayette and a principal multi-discipline systems engineer in MITRE's Center for Advanced Aviation System Development, helped the students with both projects.

Ellenbogen Receives TJHS "Tommy" Award
James Ellenbogen, chief scientist in MITRE's Emerging Technologies Division, has been selected as a recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Partnership Fund's "Tommy" Award for his work in mentoring students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)-related fields. The award will be presented on June 2 at an awards ceremony in Vienna, Va.

Gary Palmer: Guiding Students in Orlando
With a little help from MITRE's Gary Palmer, a team of Orlando, Fla.-area Civil Air Patrol cadets took first place to receive the Commander in Chief cup in the All Service division of the Air Force Association's (AFA) CyberPatriot III National Final Competition on April 1 in Washington, D.C.

MITRE and Cornell are Engineering Ideas for the National Capital Region
For the past three years, members of MITRE's Operations Research and Systems Analysis department—known informally as the "ORmadillos"—have worked with students from Cornell's School of Operations Research and Information Engineering on a project aimed at improving emergency evacuation of the National Capital Region.

Solar Cars and the Science Bowl
Twenty-two MITRE employees from the McLean, Va., campus served as judges and competition officials at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) 2010 Solar Car Challenge. Heading the MITRE delegation was Bobby Blount, associate department head of MITRE's Field Intelligence Systems in San Antonio, Texas, who served as master of ceremonies for the race.

Shaping Next-Generation Math Stars
It's hardly surprising that Edith Mooers embarked on a career in advanced mathematics: her parents were both computer pioneers who passed on a passion for learning. A lead radar data analysis engineer at MITRE in Bedford, Mass., Mooers earned a Ph.D. in pure mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked as an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of California at Los Angeles for several years.

Girls Just Wanna Be Engineers
"I was the only woman in my doctoral program and was sometimes mistaken for a university employee because there were so few women in the engineering building," explained Julie DelVecchio Savage, a chief engineer at MITRE and the keynote speaker at Young Women in Engineering Day on Nov. 13 at MITRE's Bedford campus. "Other women paved the way for me in this field; we hope today helps you and offers a support network for reaching your goals."

Everybody Wins: Thirty Minutes of Storytelling Makes a Difference in Young People's Lives
One evening a couple of years ago, lead engineer John Nordmann attended a fundraiser that would turn out to impact his life. After listening to stories about children learning to love reading through a one-on-one "buddy" program with adults, Nordmann realized that the program—called Everybody Wins—would be a perfect match for MITRE volunteers.

Volunteers Help Solve a Gen-Y Problem: Managing Expectations to Keep College Kids in Engineering
When staff from MITRE's office in Hampton, VA, began discussing with local universities how they could collaborate on research projects, the problem of keeping kids in school came up. Students in computer science classes were dropping out before completing their first two years. They weren't motivated and had unrealistic expectations. So MITRE's Tidewater Research Council (TRC) in Hampton worked with local schools to develop an outreach program that is turning the tide.

Lego League Mission to Mars Challenge for 2003
It was at Back-to-School night at Thompson Middle School in September 2003, when Diane Woodall was waiting to talk to her son's teacher. She overheard the science teacher mention to another parent that she was looking forward to the Robotics Team working on this past year's annual FIRST LEGO League challenge-Mission to Mars. FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international program for children created in a partnership between FIRST and the LEGO Company. Each September, FLL announces the annual Challenge to teams, which engages them in hands-on robotics design and authentic scientific research.

The Federation of Galaxy Explorers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was founded by Nicholas Eftimiades. When Nick told one of his site colleagues, Phil Tsang, about his concern for today's generation and society not getting enough exposure and education in engineering and aerospace, Phil wanted to help. His first thought was bringing companies into the effort.

MITRE's Dogwood Elementary School mentoring program has been in existence for the last four school years. Started by Vicki Cloutier, the program has thrived despite many upheavals at Dogwood—new administration, a new year-round schedule, and even a fire that destroyed the building.

San Antonio Creates Tomorrow's Engineers
When MITRE was asked by the Northside Independent School District Partnerships Office to establish a school-business partnership with Rayburn Middle School in San Antonio six years ago, MITRE San Antonio enthusiastically said "Yes!" The company agreed to provide technology and curriculum development support, one-on-one mentors, a business representative to their school advisory team, and an enriched mentor program.
