Sustainable Practices Underscore MITRE's Commitment to Green Building
While MITRE is encouraging employees to turn out the lights and take other measures to conserve power as part of this summer's Energy Wise campaign, MITRE itself continues to implement sustainable practices in its real estate program, placing emphasis on green building standards. With the design of a new lab building in Bedford, Mass. and the MITRE 4 building in McLean, Va., currently underway, one of the most frequently asked questions is whether the buildings will be LEED Certified.

Clean Waters
"If you paddle around the mid-Atlantic region in the summer, you'll probably agree that a dip in the water feels pretty good. It's really a shame that water quality often precludes that dip. Even if you don't take a swim, you can't be a paddler and not get wet. So water quality is very personal for me," explains Jon Kesler, a principal engineer at MITRE.

In Search of the Beaten Path
Did you know that you could hike from the north end of Fairfax County at the Potomac River to the south end at the Occoquan River? Thanks to a 10-year effort led by Bill Niedringhaus, a lead simulation and modeling engineer at MITRE, this 41-mile hike is now possible with last December's completion of the Fairfax Cross-County Trail.

Litter-Busting Lutz Elevates Quality of Life in Montgomery County
Last October, Dr. Richard Lutz was named "Citizen of the Year" by the Montgomery (Md.) County Mid-County Services Center, and the Forest Estates Community Association (of which he is president) was named "Civic Association of the Year." These awards were based on Lutz's years of hard work to beautify the area along the Georgia Ave. corridor where he lives.
