| Students Look Forward to Meeting MITRE Mentors May 2003
MITRE's Dogwood Elementary School mentoring program has been in existence for the last four school years. Started by Vicki Cloutier, the program has thrived despite many upheavals at Dogwoodnew administration, a new year-round schedule, and even a fire that destroyed the building. Through it all, an average of 14 MITRE employees have spent time reading with students, playing games with students, struggling through arithmetic problems, or just serving in a big brother/big sister role. MITRE chose to work with Dogwood because of its proximity to our Reston, Virginia campus and because Dogwood needed a business partner. The school has a very diverse population of students from various socio-economic backgrounds. Many of the students come from single parent families or households where English is not the primary language spoken. As a participating mentor as well, Cloutier feels that she gets as much out of the program as the students do. "I really look forward to the days I visit Dogwood. The energy there is incredible and the kids always seem so happy to see you. It's a great change of pace from working at a computer all day and you feel good about the positive change you are making in a young person's life." Monica Carley has had the benefit of being assigned to the same student for the entire time she has participated in the program. "Carmella is in fifth grade and I've been friends with her since the end of second grade. It has been a joy watching her grow up and getting to know her friends and teachers along the way. Carmella was shy when she was younger, but a very outgoing personality and sense of humor have emerged!"
