MITRE is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of engineers and scientists. To this end, the company supports science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in a number of ways.

  • MITRE participates in the Leadership Initiatives for Teaching and Technology (LIFT2) program, a Massachusetts-based professional learning program for middle and high school STEM teachers designed to help them relate classroom curriculum to real-world workplaces. LIFT2 was created to address the state's growing shortage of STEM professionals. Since 2007, MITRE has sponsored teacher externs to work on a variety of projects.
  • MITRE hosts Young Women in Engineering events at its Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va., campuses. At the 2009 Bedford Event 35 girls—ranging from high school freshman to seniors—took part in a variety of hands-on activities, including cell phone antenna design experiments, audio hot spotting, and a brainstorming session using the ACME (Agile Capability Mashup Environment) lab's collaborative story development kit. The 2009 McLean event introduced 20 math and science-minded teenage girls to various careers available to them in the world of engineering and other technical disciplines.
  • MITRE employees help inspire students through a variety of mentoring partnerships. One such partnership with schools in the San Antonio, Texas, area has grown into an annual Solar Car Race Event, which brings together hundreds of elementary and middle school students who work in teams to build sun-powered vehicles. At our Hampton, Va., site, MITRE employees mentor students through a partnership with two local universities to reduce computer science course drop out rates.

They sat at round tables covered in bright table cloths, talking, laughing, and listening. High school students in hooded sweatshirts and letter jackets. MITRE engineers in suits and sweaters. All had one thing in common: a belief that women can make an impact through a career in engineering.
