MITRE is committed to being a corporate leader in the wise use of natural resources and environmentally friendly practices. MITRE also supports its customers in implementing green technology practices as well.

  • The MITRE Center, a three-story, 96,000 square foot building that serves as a gateway to MITRE's Bedford, Mass., campus is designed to minimize environmental impact. Solar panels in the center's entrance canopy and on its roof generate about 16,900 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power annually. MITRE also purchases 1,546,880 kWh of wind power each year. In 2005, the MITRE Center received a silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) ranking from the U.S. Green Building Council.
  • MITRE and its employees also think "green" when it comes to recycling. In 2005, an expanded program was introduced at MITRE's Bedford and McLean, Va., campuses. The program has diverted 560 tons of material from Massachusetts landfills and 413 tons of material from Virginia landfills. This effort earned the company Fairfax County's (Va.) Business Recycling Excellence Award from 2006-2011.
  • MITRE's "green@MITRE" intranet site outlines corporate environmental activities, as well as actions employees can take at work and at home to lessen their impact on the environment. MITRE also supports alternative transportation programs such as carpooling, cycling, and telecommuting. A free shuttle service operates from the McLean campus to the Washington Metro, and Bedford's Ground Transportation Service uses hybrid cars to reduce the company's carbon footprint.
  • MITRE's Green Information Technology (IT) Working Group is focusing on implementing a more efficient, eco-friendly IT infrastructure. Accomplishments to date include:
    • Replacement of CRT monitors with LCD monitors, which use up to 60 percent less energy.
    • Ensuring that all computers are now Energy Star compliant.
    • Implementing duplex printing as the default on all duplex-capable printers.
  • MITRE is exploring how small adjustments at the beginning and end of aircrafts' flight paths could add up to big benefits to the environment through a new internally funded research effort called Green Airspace Design.
