| From the Troops, a Gift of Old Glory December 2010
A flag with potent patriotic resonance now graces MITRE's campus, serving as a "thank you" from U.S. troops for the efforts employees have made on their behalf. MITRE recently received the American flag that flew on Sept. 11, 2010, over the unfinished "Victory Over America" palace Saddam Hussein began after the 1991 Gulf War. The flag was one of several flown during a remembrance ceremony in honor of the victims of 9/11. It was presented to MITRE in appreciation for the annual Summer Troop Care Package Drive, organized by MITRE's Diversity and Work Life department to gather and send care packages to American troops around the world. "We send [the flag] to you as a sign of our gratitude for your support," wrote Air Force Lt. Col. Mark Tedrow in a letter to MITRE's Maureen Hardy, who coordinates the annual care package campaign. "We are honored that the MITRE team invested so much time and expense in making our lives here a little better." The Summer Troop Care Package Drive has been an annual event at MITRE since 2007. The 2010 drive yielded food, books, magazines, and even phone cards, which were sent to 38 family members and friends of MITRE employees who submitted their names to MITRE's Quality of Work Life division. "It was a surprise," says Pierre Morel, one of the MITRE employees who submitted a warfighter's name for donations. "I was very impressed by the gift of the flag. It made me take a lot more pride in MITRE. It's a great tribute to Maureen and all the people who helped put these care packages together." For her part, Hardy says receiving the flag "is a great honor... It is beyond moving when you think about this flag and all it represents." The flag flew over the Bedford campus on Veterans Day. Plans are being made to display it in the MITRE Center later. —by Russell Woolard Page last updated: December 8, 2010 | Top of page |
