The National Security Engineering Center FFRDC has developed numerous competencies to meet the specific needs of its customers.

Overview

MITRE was established in 1958 to support the development and fielding of electronically based air defense systems. Today, MITRE's National Security Engineering Center (formerly the DoD Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence FFRDC) supports a broad and diverse set of sponsors within the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community. These include the military departments, defense and intelligence agencies, the combatant commands, and elements of both the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The systems engineering activities for these sponsors cover a wide range from concept development through the acquisition and fielding of advanced capabilities. Information systems technology, coupled with domain knowledge, underpin the work of the NSEC.

The depth and breadth of NSEC's work program generate both the obligation and the opportunity to support the DoD's achievement of its own broader vision. In that spirit, the current DoD/MITRE sponsoring agreement states that, "While serving the immediate needs of the many individual programs it supports, the FFRDC directs its work program toward achieving the DoD's vision of an integrated command and control capability based upon C4ISR systems that support joint U.S. and multinational military operations."

Command and Control Center (C2C)
The Command and Control Center serves MITRE's full range of Department of Defense sponsors and places special emphasis on creating a joint command, control, and communications system. The center works closely with MITRE's Center for Integrated Intelligence Systems, Center for Enterprise Modernization, and Center for Advanced Aviation System Development.
