Mr. Mark W. Kontos Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer
Mr. Kontos is responsible for ensuring MITRE's financial strength and maintaining its leadership as a preeminent manager of Federally Funded Research and Development Centers. Since joining MITRE in 2005, Mr. Kontos has developed an aggressive program for improving the company's business processes, financial information, management systems, performance metrics, budgeting and planning protocols, and decision support tools. Before joining MITRE, Mr. Kontos served as a financial consultant to Northrop Grumman, advising on strategic business initiatives for their IT Technical Services Group, including bid decisions to manage and operate several U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories. Previously, Mr. Kontos was CFO, senior vice president, and executive committee member at Battelle Memorial Institute, where he introduced value-driven performance metrics, improved strategic planning processes, and initiated strategies to commercialize promising intellectual property. While at Battelle, he also managed the company's capital-raising process, supervised its $1.8 billion investment portfolio, instituted best practices in financial controls, and maintained an A+ credit rating. Mr. Kontos served as a board director for eight of Battelle's 12 subsidiaries. Additionally, he served on the boards and executive committees and chaired the finance/audit/risk management committees of the Brookhaven and Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Prior to Battelle, Mr. Kontos was CFO and vice president of AK Steel Corporation, where he recapitalized the firm and engineered a financial turnaround returning the company to profitability. Earlier in his career, he spent 15 years with Citibank/Citigroup, holding a variety of domestic and overseas positions, including vice president of the World Corporation Group and vice president of Institutional Recovery Management. He is a member of the Financial Executives Institute and the Corporate Executive Board Working Council of CFOs. Mr. Kontos received his bachelor's degree in political science from Beloit College and his MBA in finance and international business from the University of Chicago.
