Ms. Lillian Zarrelli Ryals

Ms. Lillian Zarrelli Ryals is director, senior vice president and general manager of the Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD), the federally funded research and development center sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). CAASD supports the FAA and international civil aviation authorities in addressing the aviation system's most critical capacity, efficiency, safety, and security needs. Ms. Ryals' responsibilities include CAASD's overall strategic planning, sponsor and stakeholder engagement, and work program oversight.

Concurrent with her general manager responsibilities, Ms. Ryals is also the corporate lead for MITRE's company-wide activities in support of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). In this role, she directs and aligns MITRE's NextGen work across multiple government agencies, including the FAA, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Joint Planning and Development Office.

Ms. Ryals has more than 30 years of experience working in the aviation sector across a broad range of National Airspace System modernization and operations activities. Since joining MITRE in 1979, she has provided an increasing level of leadership for the ATM/CNS (air traffic management/communication navigation and surveillance) systems evolution and operations work for the FAA. This work has encompassed operational concepts and infrastructure for future terminal, surface, en route, oceanic, and flow management decision support systems; aircraft and ground system elements for communications, navigation, and surveillance; integrated airspace and procedures design, traffic flow operations and procedures; unmanned aircraft systems; and aviation system safety and security.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Ryals held a prime development role with Allied Bendix in the design of the company's prototype Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System.

Throughout her career, Ms. Ryals has actively participated in aviation industry committees and national and international aviation standards bodies, including the International Civil Aviation Organization and RTCA. She serves on the RTCA NextGen Advisory Committee Subcommittee and is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Air Traffic Control Association, and the Aero Club. Ms. Ryals is chair of the board of directors of Women in Aerospace.

Ms. Ryals holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Maryland, University College.
