photo of George Valley

George Valley ("Father of SAGE"), Director of SAGE, 1952-1958, speaking to members of the press at the announcement of the SAGE system for continental air defense on January 16, 1956.

MITRE's nearly 50 years of dedicated service in the public interest reflect a rich history of some of the most important advances in engineering technology and computer design. MITRE's technical achievements had—and continue to have—a momentous impact on government, business, and society.

The photographs in this archive provide a brief flashback to the people, places, and technical marvels that laid the foundation for The MITRE Corporation.

Archive photographs available at this time include:

  • Whirlwind Photos: MITRE's roots can be found in Project Whirlwind, an MIT project for the U.S. Navy. Future MITRE President Robert Everett was an assistant to Director Jay Forrester at MIT's Digital Computer Laboratory. Together they worked on Whirlwind from design (1947) through operation (1951).

  • SAGE Photos: The Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) was MITRE's first mission, built and maintained for the U.S. Air Force's air defense of North America from 1958 through 1984. MITRE was chief engineer, technology innovator, and trusted counsel on SAGE through the years of the Cold War.
