Geospatial and Sensor Technologies

Capabilities

Our department is conducting sponsored work and internal research in the following areas:

  • Enterprise and Extended Enterprise Implementations.

We are assisting our sponsors in establishing the concept of operations, standard operating procedures, and hardware/software architectures for managing and exchanging, analyzing, and visualizing geospatial information across the enterprise.

  • Geospatial Data Administration.  We administer the MITRE Information Technology Center's internal database of geospatial data, and assist our sponsors in establishing sound geospatial data administration practices.

  • Technology Assessment.  Our ITC Geospatial Center of Excellence is a state of the art laboratory which allows us to experiment with the latest in commercial geospatial technology and integrate it with prototypes from the MITRE research program.

  • Standards.  We take a vendor neutral, open systems approach to solving our sponsors' geospatial data management and analysis problems – by incorporating appropriate domain, national, and international standards into our solutions whenever practicable.

  • Intelligence Analysis.  We focus on critical problems of national importance. We are currently supporting projects dealing with challenging needs such as border protection, biosurveillance, and disaster response.

  • Sensor System Exploitation.  Our work in sensor and sensor platform development encompasses collection, processing and exploitation of sensor data. Our expertise focuses on Imagery Intelligence (IMINT) and Measurement and Signatures Intelligence (MASINT) sensing technologies, including Side-looking Aperture Radar (SAR), Infrared (IR), and Multi-spectral Imagery/Hyper-spectral Imagery (MSI/HSI)

  • Software Architecture.  Our work in geospatial data and tools integration incorporates aspects of distributed computing and web services. Our emphasis is on layered architectures that are services oriented and capitalize on the best of the network and enterprise infrastructure. Our staff has provided sponsors with advice and assistance in the adoption of unit testing frameworks, application performance assessments, and best practices for adopting agile software development methodologies.

  • Software Development.  We perform prototype software development in a variety of application domains including airspace design, modeling and simulation, geospatial analysis and data integration, visualization, document retrieval, and image exploitation.
