Many MITRE employees donate their time and skills within their communities.

At MITRE, working in the public interest is at the heart of everything we do. Although our status as a not-for-profit operator of federally funded research and development centers precludes us from donating financial resources directly to charitable organizations, we encourage our employees to donate their time and skills to activities and efforts that will impact positively on the quality of life in the communities in which we live and work.

Whether individually or as teams, our employees have found many ways to give back to their communities:

Education

• Sparking young women's interest in engineering careers



• When employees and kids get together to share their love of reading, then Everybody Wins.



• Organizing a math club for elementary school students



• Coordinating the Sea Scout venturing program for local youths



• MITRE's Tidewater Research Council in Hampton, VA, motivates computer science students.



• Teaching children about technology and engineering through the "Texas Solar Race Car," "Galaxy Explorer," and "FIRST LEGO League's Mission to Mars" programs



• Serving as mentors in reading, math, and science at the Dogwood Elementary School, in Reston, Virginia

Health and Human Services

• Walking more than 26 miles to support the fight against cancer



• Visiting nursing homes as a hospice volunteer



• Taking the Penguin Plunge to raise funds for Special Olympics



• Serving as a goodwill ambassador on a Vietnam humanitarian aid expedition



• Helping kids with medical hair loss through Locks of Love



• Assisting disaster relief efforts as members of Red Cross rescue squads, life support training, and emergency medical service teams



• Organizing groups of employees to participate in the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" and other worthy causes



• Sending care packages to soldiers serving their country overseas



• Supporting the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program, providing toys, games, and clothing for needy families during the winter holidays



• Collecting, preparing, and distributing food baskets to less fortunate communities



• Participating in Washington D.C.'s "Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes" and "Avon Breast Cancer Walk"

Arts and Culture

• Preserving cultures by serving as coordinates for such events as the Celtic and Scottish Festival



• Assisting visitors at one of the 16 Smithsonian Institution museums or National Zoo

Civic and Community

• Teaching teens to improve the homes of some of Virginia's poorest residents



• Using specialized skills as a human tracker for search-and-rescue missions



• Going out to help in Colorado



• Working in an environmentally friendly "eco-village"



• Creating a cross-county hiking trail



• Founding a volunteer club



• Forming a team of community volunteers



• Providing aid to those affected by Hurricane Katrina



• Donating time and effort to help build houses for families in need through Habitat for Humanity (HFH)



• Helping conduct searches with an air-scent search and rescue (SAR) dog team



• Providing training and business attire to wounded veterans seeking employment after their military careers



• Participating in the annual corporate-wide United Way Campaign, a fund-raising activities that donates resources to community programs



• Helping to maintain and preserve our state parks and local communities



• Founding and running a non-profit organization that performs anti-drug, anti-violence at Washington metro area schools, churches, and community events
