| Meet a Friend of the Zoo August 2002
Are you concerned about conservation? Amy Nahirny is very concerned about the environment and diminishing habitats that plague our world. That's why you'll find her volunteering at the National Zoo in Washington D.C. While visiting a friend who was volunteering at the zoo, Amy met other volunteers and learned about the different opportunities ranging from working with visitors and staff to nurturing the plants and animals. For the past two years, Amy has helped greet people and worked at booths at such events as Seal Day, Guppy Gala, and most recently May's Spring Fling. The National Zoo hosts numerous events throughout the year to raise money for the upkeep of the zoo. Zoofari/Spring Fling is the zoo's major fund raising event to purchase equipment and animals for the zoo. Amy loves animals and they love her back. Besides the special events, she has worked as a keeper's aide in the small mammal house where she fed marmosets and tamarins grapes and they swung on her ponytail. She also loves working with the public, especially helping the children learn about the lives, habitats, and conservation efforts for animals around the world. Amy says, "Every day we hear about the terrible things that go on in our world, but at the zoo you see the good side of people-people working to make the world a better place for animals and humans".
