Powerhouse of Efficiency: Managing the Logistics
of the MITRE Technology Symposium
Paulette Osterberg
September 2002
"I truly enjoy working with the brilliant scientists in this company.
The MITRE Technology
Symposium is an annual event held at the corporate offices in Bedford,
Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia. The symposium provides a forum
for sponsors, customers, and staff to hear about some of the innovative
work being conducted within the MITRE Technology Program (MTP).
The MTP is MITRE's research program, comprising both MITRE-sponsored
research projects and research efforts for various sponsors.
Paulette Osterberg has managed the logistics of the MITRE Technology
Symposium since its beginning, nine years ago. The Symposium gives
MITRE an opportunity to showcase some of its most advanced and innovative
technology research and to share discoveries with MITRE staff and
various sponsors.
"I truly enjoy working with the brilliant scientists in this
company. We try to work it so they do not realize what it takes
to put these symposia together," Osterberg confides, "and
we do our very best to make the production of the symposia as efficient
andstreamlined as possible.
"It takes a great deal of planning and dedication from a lot
of different people within the company to make this event happen
each year. For example, during the planning process we work closely
with the project leaders and principal investigators of each research
project represented at the event. The team produces and organizes
project summaries, published papers, invitations, and publicity.
It takes two days to set up the infrastructure and network, which
involves graphic artists, electricians, and network technicians,"
she explains.
"The entire production and planning comes to fruition at 9
a.m. of Tech Symposium day, when we open the doors to the public,"
she adds.

Osterberg—who has been with MITRE since 1987, serving in
several different roles—is responsible for much more than
the planning and execution of the Tech Symposium. As administrative
assistant to Dave Lehman, senior vice presidentand chief of information
and technology at MITRE, she is involvedwith the smooth operation
of the MITRE Technology Program (MTP).
"I am very involved in supporting the life-cycle process of
the MTP," Osterberg explains. "It is the best part of
my job, as Dave Lehman's assistant, to handle all the details to
make the MTP work efficiently and successfully." She also has
many other job responsibilities—in addition to the MTP and
Technology Symposium—such as coordinating activities for the
Center for Information and Technology, which Lehman oversees.
Says Lehman, "I must tell you honestly, Paulette is an integral
and essential element of this company's demonstrated success with
our MITRE Technology Program. What she has accomplished for MITRE
since she came on board the MTP team nine years ago has been phenomenal.
And I have received many accolades as to our successful symposia
events. I can take very little credit for these events. Believe
me, it is Paulette who makes them happen."
