Society of Women Engineers Presents Top Award to Judith A. Clapp The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) presented its top award, the SWE Achievement Award, to Judith A. Clapp, in a ceremony that took place at SWE's annual convention in Denver, Colo., at the end of June. Ms. Clapp, who is a senior software systems engineer in MITRE's home campus in Bedford, Mass., joined the corporation in 1959. The citation for the award reads: "In recognition for significant contributions to technologies for managing the development and acquisition of large scale command and control systems, and establishing software engineering as a discipline." The Society's Achievement Award is presented annually to a woman who has made an outstanding contribution over a significant period of time in a field of engineering. According to SWE, the main criteria for selection are based on the significance of the lifetime achievements cited on behalf of the nominee and on the sustained contributions of the nominee to the field of engineering. The Society was founded in 1950 and currently has more than 16,000 members. Before she came to MITRE, Ms. Clapp was the only woman on a team at MIT's digital computer lab that developed a prototype for national air defense system. At MITRE, she was the first to leverage Internet technology to create a knowledge base for engineers. Her current work for the U.S. Department of Defense is in the field of software engineering technology, focusing on how to manage that technology for large command and control systems. Ms. Clapp holds degrees from Smith College and Radcliffe, and lives in Cambridge, Mass. Page last updated: May 21, 2002 | Top of page |
