Advances in sensing, networking, communication, and information management exert an ever-increasing impact on our daily lives. Commercial systems and technologies such as imaging cell phones, Blackberries, Global Positioning System (GPS), wireless toll systems, fingerprint and voiceprint authorization, wireless security and purchasing cards, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, network security surveillance, etc., have proliferated to the point where they are commonplace in today’s world. In the future, interconnected systems of systems, each containing potentially thousands of heterogeneous intelligent (or “smart”) objects (sensors, networks, databases, processors, agents, etc.) will be embedded in our daily lives. NS has the potential to radically change how MITRE’s sponsors address difficult sensing problems. The potential transformation is profound—and difficult to predict.
MITRE has established a multi year NS Initiative to accelerate the application of NS technologies to our sponsors’ sensing missions. The program is in its second year and has three components
- R&D in the areas of Detection, Tracking, Classification and ID algorithms, Resource optimization algorithms, Information Management and Communications & Networking,
- Development of a Research, Experimentation & Evaluation Fabric (REEF) that can be used for Software and hardware system prototyping & testing,
- Use of a set of challenge problems to focus the research and assess progress.
This page contains copies of papers that have been published by NS project team members in 2005 and 2006. The titles of the publications for download are as follows:
