Chasing HAL:
In Pursuit of a Human-Computer Interface
Consider for a moment two people in casual conversation. Each brings
to the conversation a vast, enormously versatile and powerful ability:
speech!
VLSI: Very Large-Scale
Integration Where Small Is Getting Smaller Fast!
If the world is agog in fascination over the Internet, long-haul
networks and LANs, the network "inside the box"—those miniature universes
of Integrated Circuits (ICs) that rule every computer—are readying
a little fascination of their own.
MITRE Research
Helps FCC Evaluate Bandwidth Sharing
Radio, television, cell phone, satellite, and other communication
signals are transmitted by means of frequencies in the electromagnetic
spectrum. To reduce interference, specific "bands" of frequencies
within that spectrum are allocated to different services and users.
Enabling
Enterprise Security with CVE
Mistakes in software code—anything from a typo, a math error,
incomplete logic, poor configuration, or incorrect use of a function
or command, to an oversight in the requirements guiding the design
and coding—can result in security complications.

URET: Air
Traffic Control System Reaches Operational Milestone
Until recently, the 800 air traffic controllers at the Indianapolis
and Memphis Air Route Traffic Control Centers relied on a fairly limited
set of tools to manage flight data and predict conflicting flight
paths. But today, as a result of close collaboration between the Centers
and MITRE’s Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD),
a new decision-support system, the User Request Evaluation Tool (URET),
is available for controllers at both sites.
Stopping Traffic:
Anti Drug Network (ADNET)
Over the years, MITRE has increased its involvement in the program—working
in the areas of system architecture, long-range planning, technology
insertion, advanced prototype development, and proof-of-concept demonstration.
Operational
Architectures: The Foundation of C2 System of Systems
A key to information integration across all elements of the military
is a common vocabulary that both warfighters and system engineers
understand. The MITRE team at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia,
in collaboration with MITRE-Bedford and the Electronic Systems Center
(ESC), is building this vocabulary, known as architecture.

Building
a Modern IRS Through Enterprise Architecture
MITRE, in conjunction with the IRS and the prime contractor team,
has played a crucial role in guiding the development of the new IRS
EA, which will allow the agency to make the transition to a more efficient
future while dealing with current business and technological needs.
The Parallels
of a Taxing Situation
The new FFRDC, sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), created
an IRS/MITRE partnership focused on modernizing the nation's tax administration
system and helping the IRS evolve to a state-of-the-art information
technology (IT) enterprise.
