ITU Works Toward International Telecommunications Standardization

By Grant Paul

The International Telecommunications Union—Telecommunications Standardization Sector
(ITU-T) studies technical, operating and tariff questions and adopts recommendations on them with a view to standardizing telecommunications on a worldwide basis. One of the 14 Study Groups (SG) that make up the ITU-T is responsible for generating the recommendations for data collaboration and videoconferencing. T.120 is a family of recommendations that define the protocols for data collaboration, and H.3xx are "umbrella" recommendations for videoconferencing. It should be noted that T.120 is "network independent," while the videoconferencing recommendations are keyed to a particular network transport (e.g., N-ISDN, ATM, IP, etc.).
