STEVE HUFFMAN, VP, CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER

Welcome to the first issue of Envision. We launched this magazine to offer you insight into the emerging technologies coalescing in the laboratories at MITRE and research centers around the globe. Emerging technologies are those technologies beginning their journey from the realm of science to that of engineering. They are the technologies whose practical uses have yet to be discovered, but if found, will have the potential to create radical change. They are the technologies you need to know about today because they will shape the decisions you make in five to ten years.

Emerging technologies can have enormous implications for business, government, and the public at large. They can transform industries and government operations by opening the way for revolutionary concepts of operations and for quantum leaps in capabilities. MITRE devotes a portion of its research program to scouting these technologies and assessing their potential implications. We do this because our mission charges us not only to help our sponsors address their current challenges, but also to prepare them for future ones. Our investigation helps our sponsors anticipate future benefits and be well prepared to cope with the potential tectonic shifts often brought on by new and disruptive technologies.

Envision was created to share what we've learned about emerging technologies through our research program. The topics addressed by the articles within were selected to offer a revealing snapshot of both the current breadth of research and the curiosity and creativity of MITRE researchers. While our primary goal is to share information with you on these technologies, we also want to encourage collaboration and dialogue to the greatest extent possible. You'll see that the authors have included their email addresses if you have comments or questions. In addition, if you visit our website (www.mitre.org/envision), the authors have posted links to other related articles you might find of interest. We invite you to share your thoughts and feedback and to stay connected with us as we continue to research and explore technology to transform tomorrow.
