Frontiers in Optics and Laser Science Conference Tucson, Arizona, November 2005 Ravi Athale, a principal communications engineer at The MITRE Corporation, spoke on the future of photonics. According to Athale, "the world of compound semiconductors is moving to silicon, metals, and polymers; bandgap and refractive index manipulation is moving to material size and shape manipulation; and separate optimization of subsystems is moving to joint design and optimization of subsystems." Interactive Tutorial York, Maine, September 2005 On September 1, the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) hosted a live Webcast presented by Julie McEwen, CIPP/G, principal engineer at The MITRE Corporation. The 90-minute interactive tutorial covered all of the government privacy laws, policies and practices addressed in the Certified Information Privacy Professional/Government (CIPP/G) certification exam. Air Traffic Control Association Washington, D.C., June 2005 Amr ElSawy, senior vice president and general manager, spoke at the recent ATCA symposium entitled "Rightsizing the NAS." ElSawy explained that the FAA could save more than $60 million per year on operations and maintenance and $1.7 billion in multi-year replacement costs by retiring 50 of its 750 radars and moving to a system centered on Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast.
