MITRE in the News - 2000 Washington Times The December 18 issues' "Kudos" column notes that MITRE has honored two members of its technical staff, Emily Beaton and Shane Miller, for their role in developing a newly patented software tool, called SMART, which enables airlines to sequence their own flight arrivals to improve air traffic flow at airports. Newsweek In an article in the November 27 issue, John Woodward, MITRE's director of information warfare, discusses the future challenges posed by computer network and security break-ins. Business & Commercial Aviation An article in the October issue highlights the changes and controversy triggered by the increased number of regional jets in the U.S. market. Dr. William Trigeiro, MITRE principal investigator, comments on findings of his 1999 study on regional jets. Aviation Week & Space Technology In the September 18 issue, Amr El Sawy, MITRE's Director of the Center for Advanced Aviation System Development, tells how using data link can reduce the work load of air traffic controllers and give them more time to plan ahead, manage traffic and select appropriate actions. Federal Computer Week In the August 7 issue, Chris Yonclas, technical manager for systems architecture and integration at MITRE, discusses the battlefield implications of the Army's new information architecture called Openwings. Information Week In the July 31 cover story on new ways businesses are structuring information technology staff within their organizations, MITRE's deputy CIO Dolly Greenwood discusses how IT is becoming more closely associated with business goals. Washington Techway In a June 12 feature on the Washington area's involvement in the field of nanotechnology, MITRE principal scientist James Ellenbogen discusses the implications of some recent breakthroughs. CIO Magazine The May issue features interviews with MITRE vice president and CIO Al Grasso and MITRE's division director Mark Maybury who discuss benefits derived from MITRE's intranet, the MITRE Information Infrastructure. Government Executive Magazine MITRE'S Purchase Card Program is reviewed in the May issue, which directs government agencies to MITRE's technology transfer web site to obtain free copies of purchase card software. The Economist An article in the April 7 issue reviews the latest advances in nanotechnology and discusses MITRE's molecular adder which would be a millionith of the size of those now being used on commercial computer chips. The International Herald Tribune This March 24 article (reprinted in The New York Times and the National Post), gives extensive coverage to MITRE's role in nanotechnology research and the imminent prospect of commercial development of computing circuits no larger than a single molecule. The Washington Post An article in the March 5 issue includes MITRE's views on why "Cyberterrorism Intensifies Demand for Security Specialists." Aerospace America The March issue features an interview with MITRE's CEO Martin Faga, then executive vice president. Topics addressed include various aspects of U.S. space programming and funding. MSNBC.com A February 18, 2000 article on this web site discusses MITRE's role in the increased cooperation between law-enforcement agencies and the internet industry as they respond to cyber vandals' attacks on popular web sites. New York Times A January 6, 2000 article on how "Technology May Ease Air Traffic Choke Points" discusses MITRE's role in developing new software. The article was reprinted in the January 16th San Diego Union-Tribune. Computing The magazine's January 6, 2000 issue features nanotechnology as one of three technologies that could revolutionize life in the new century.
