MITRE in the News - 2002 eWeek – Boston Bureau SANS Director Alan Paller reported to eWeek (July 02) that there are some industries and sectors where security hiring is still strong. Those include government agencies such as the Department of Defense, the CIA and the National Security Agency, as well as the principal consulting firms that support them, including companies such as Science Applications International Corp., The MITRE Corporation and Computer Sciences Corporation. Washington Technology An article in Washington Technology (June 14), mentioned MITRE as leading the applications analysis and performance assessment team for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop components for the next generation high performance computers. The contracts were awarded to Cray Inc., IBM Corp, Silicon Graphics Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc. Signal In May, Signal Magazine reported that The MITRE Corporation is developing the CT2 Technology, a concept called Collaboration Techniques for Coalition Teams. The project addresses the need for collaboration and interoperation of secure, real-time communication at the command level in allied environments. Potomac Technical Journal The Potomac Technical Journal (April 22) reported that Jacob Burnim, a senior at Montogomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md., has spent the last two summers as part of the nano-technology and molecular electronics group at MITRE where he has been part of extensive research into the ways computer memory can be shrunk by using nano-size organic molecules rather than metal and silicon as building materials. Federal Computer Week MITRE developed a mathematical model, mentioned in the March 25 issue of Federal Computer Week, to create new landing procedures for the FAA to offer guidance down to 350 feet to planes equipped for the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), a network of ground stations that correct satellite signals and broadcast them to receivers on aircraft. This new landing procedure has put WAAS two years ahead of schedule. Washington Technology In February, Washington Technology reported that The Open Channel Software Foundation, a nonprofit, Chicago-based organization that publishes software developed by academic and research institutions, has released a new set of applications developed by MITRE. They include 2 development tool kits for interfacing with Java and for capturing interactions with graphical user interfaces; an IP-based protocol used by mobile routers for on-the-move communications; utilities to analyze network performance and to aggregate system administration logs; and Web-based collaborative learning software. Fortune Magazine In January, Fortune Magazine rated MITRE number 40 on their list of 100 best companies to work for. Fortune placed most of the value on results of a randomly selected employee survey that measured the quality of workplace culture. Air Transport Intelligence According to an article in Air Transport Intelligence (January 2002), the FAA is conducting preliminary work with MITRE in preparation for having NASA Ames model proposed infrastructural and operational changes at various US airports to see if and how they reduce the rate and severity of runway incursions.
