| MITRE Wins Federal Linux Award FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Virginia, December 13, 2000 — The MITRE Corporation has honored Principal Software Systems Engineer Emily Beaton and Senior Software Applications Developer Shane Miller for their role in developing a software tool, called SMART, that enables airlines to sequence their own flight arrivals to improve air traffic flow at airports. The newly patented tool gives advance projections of congestion levels at destination airports based on the number of planes in the air as well as those on the ground at any given time. Using the tool, airlines can adjust flights in real time, delaying or expediting departures or adjusting flight speeds enroute. The MITRE team, led by Beaton, developed the tool as a research project sponsored by the FAA. MITRE, a not-for-profit technology resource for the U.S. government, has made SMART publicly available as part of its effort to transfer useful technologies into the public sphere. MITRE President and CEO Marty Faga, who presented Beaton and Miller with plaques commemorating the patent award, noted that SMART "is one of a series of exciting technologies that are coming together to make a difference in air traffic management." MITRE (www.mitre.org) is an independent, not-for-profit systems engineering firm that was chartered to work in the national interest. The corporation manages Federally Funded Research and Development Centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, and has primary offices in Bedford, Mass., and Northern Virginia.
