| MITRE Receives "Healthy Workplace" Award from the Massachusetts Psychological Association FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher
Bedford, Massachusetts, November 3, 2000 — The Massachusetts Psychological Association (MPA) today awarded its Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award to The MITRE Corporation in Bedford, MA, for creating a superior work environment for employees. The award was presented at a ceremony in Boston that coincided with the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Day proclaimed by Massachusetts Governor Paul Cellucci. Established by The Massachusetts Psychological Association in collaboration with the American Psychological Association, the annual prize is designed to formally recognize companies that provide a healthy and harmonious work environment for employees. MITRE's Paid Time Off Bank, Flexible Working Hours, and the Employee Assistance Program were evaluated as "outstanding" in promoting the psychological well-being of employees by MPA's Awards Committee. The Committee ruled that these benefits give employees the flexibility and control to balance work and family, as well as an accessible mechanism to help with problems that may interfere with family life and job performance. One of the goals of the award is to encourage the business community's interest in creating healthy work environments and highlight the connection between employee satisfaction, employee productivity, and company profitability, according to Dr. William Roiter of the MPA Awards Committee. Dr. Roiter said the recognized companies all respected professional and personal risk-taking, created an atmosphere of respect and sharing, and fostered a strong belief in unselfish action. Mr. William Albright, Jr., the Director of MITRE Human Resources' Quality of Work Life Division, said his division's responsibility was precisely to enhance the work environment for employees. "We're excited and delighted to receive this recognition for our continuing efforts to attract and retain quality people, and to create the kind of workplace atmosphere in which they can be productive." MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides engineering services to the government. Chartered to work in the public interest, it operates Federally Funded Research and Development Centers for the DOD, the FAA and the IRS. Other organizations recognized at the MPA Awards Ceremony for programs and policies designed to reduce workplace stress and enhance the quality of family life were the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Burlington, Mellon Financial Corporation in Boston and Everett, and the Massachusetts Nurses Association in Canton.
