| MITRE Recognized by AARP for Exemplary Practices Toward Older Workers FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher Bedford, Massachusetts, October 2, 2001 — The MITRE Corporation has been recognized by AARP, the nonprofit membership organization for people 50 and over, for exemplary practices toward older workers. MITRE's Director of Quality of Work Life & Benefits Bill Albright commented on the recognition. He said, "We are extremely pleased to receive this prestigious recognition from AARP and appreciate the recognition that is associated with it. It is nice to know that our corporate culture, policies, and programs are such that we can attract and retain outstanding employees to help us meet our corporate objectives regardless of age. At MITRE, we need creative ideas, outstanding performance, and high productivity from our staff, and have found that our older workers are great contributors in satisfying these needs." MITRE highlighted in its nomination its policies toward improved health benefits for retired employees, flexible work schedules, mentoring programs, and its Reserves at the Ready Program. Reserves at the Ready are technical, administrative, and other support staff with the skills and corporate memory needed to provide dynamic, short-term support to critical MITRE projects. Participants become part-time-on-call employees. They fill out an online resume that may be searched to fulfill specific work program requirements, or for other assignments. Recognizing the value of older workers for corporate success, MITRE's Reserves at the Ready is ahead of the curve in embracing new trends in employment and recruiting. According to Bureau of Labor Statistic projections, nearly 20 percent of the workforce will be 55 and older by 2015. (Today that figure is at 13 percent.) MITRE's forward-thinking policies in establishing Reserves at the Ready are also illustrated by research that suggests 80 percent of boomers say they plan to work in retirement. According to AARP, workers age 55 to 64 will increase by 40 percent between now and 2015.
