Bedford, Massachusetts, May 16, 2001 — The public release of MITRE's Collaborative Virtual Workspace (CVW) technology has resulted in the establishment of a consortium of collaboration vendors.

CVW is a virtual workplace that integrates audio, video and data conferencing to support operations across time and space. According to Dr. Mark Maybury, Executive Director of MITRE's Information Technology Division, "CVW has been an extremely effective tool for virtual collaboration across government, commercial and academic organizations. Users can see, hear and share data in real-time, communicating and collaborating from points across the globe."

Last fall MITRE ceded ownership of CVW to the public domain via SourceForge (www.sourceforge.net), to encourage further development and enhancement of the technology. Recently, four commercial companies—CollabraSpace, CACI, CTX, and ESS—announced the establishment of a vendor collaboration consortium to further develop this technology. Specifically, the consortium aims to assume the support of existing CVW users, provide enhanced CVW capabilities, and offer new or existing users a COTS version of the technology.

"We are delighted to have successfully transitioned CVW," concluded Dr. Maybury. "This is an excellent example of MITRE working in the public interest to advance the state-of-the-art of collaboration technology."

MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit national technology resource that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates Federally Funded Research and Development Centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service. The collaboration consortium vendors can be found at: www.collabraspace.com, www.caci.com, www.ctx.com, and www.essworld.net.
