| Quilty Promoted to Lead MITRE's DOD Federally Funded R&D Center FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Virginia, April 4, 2001 — MITRE Chairman of the Board James Schlesinger and President and CEO Martin Faga are pleased to announce the promotion of John S. Quilty to lead the federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) that MITRE operates in support of the Department of Defense (DOD). The FFRDC conducts systems engineering work in the areas of command, control, communications and intelligence (C3I). MITRE is an independent, not-for-profit company that provides technical support to the government. Principal headquarters are in Bedford, MA, and McLean, VA. In his new position, Quilty will be responsible for managing all of MITRE's DOD C3I work, ensuring integration across its various programs to achieve defense and intelligence community objectives. Quilty formerly served as senior vice president and general manager of MITRE's Washington C3 Center, where he managed C3I work for various elements of the DOD. Prior to that, he assisted MITRE's general manager as vice president of the Washington C3 Division, and has had assignments of increasing responsibility since joining MITRE in 1962. Quilty serves as chairman of the Military Communications (MILCOM) conference board, and is on the board of the annual NATO workshop "Partners for Peace." He recently served on the National Research Council committee that published a report on C4I challenges facing the Defense Department. Quilty received a master of science degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1962, and a bachelor of science degree in the same discipline from Princeton University in 1961.
