| MITRE Makes Cutting-Edge Cyber Security Software Publicly Available Through the Open Channel Foundation FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Virginia, September 4, 2001 — As part of its public service mission, the MITRE Corporation's Technology Transfer Office announces the availability of Spitfire, MITRE-developed intrusion detection software, on the Open Channel Foundation's open source Web site (www.openchannelfoundation.org). Originally developed for military use, "Spitfire" is a software interface that allows users to immediately detect and take action against hacker attacks. Spitfire interfaces with commercially available intrusion detection systems, providing user-friendly screen displays for real-time notification of intrusions. Spitfire also integrates the output of these systems into a single database, providing historical and trend analysis of network intrusion incidents. "MITRE developed Spitfire in 1997 to fill a void faced by network security operators. Before Spitfire, there was no easy way to manage the abundance of data generated by the current generation of intrusion detection products," said John Woodward, MITRE Director of Information Warfare. "This powerful and easy-to-use system allows users to take advantage of the best features of various detection programs." Developed in conjunction with the U.S. Air Force, Spitfire has been highly successful in military exercises for the Air Force, the Naval Security Group, the U.S. Army's Land Information Warfare Activity, and has been installed in the U.S. House of Representatives. "We are pleased to add Spitfire and MITRE Corporation to our growing list of partners and products," said Douglas Curry, Vice President of Business Development at Chicago-based Open Channel Foundation. "Spitfire represents a timely, major step forward in the development and deployment of secure networks," he said, adding that the software greatly complements the other programs to be accessed within Open Channel Foundation's network application Discipline. The goal of MITRE's technology transfer program is to ensure that MITRE technology is broadly applied for the benefit of our government sponsors and the public. For further information on Spitfire, as well as other available technologies, go to MITRE's Technology Transfer Office home page. MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit national technology resource that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Massachusetts, and Northern Virginia. The Open Channel Foundation (OCF) is a non-profit publisher that consolidates and Web-hosts innovative and technically advanced libraries of significant academic and research-oriented software solutions, all in open-source formats. Hosted applications are segmented into categories called Disciplines. Those software products that demonstrate sufficient business potential and investment appeal are proactively marketed and distributed by OCF's commercialization arm, Open Channel Software Inc., which provides support and services to customers on a fee basis.
