McLean, Virginia, November 20, 2001 — The MITRE Corporation's Technology Transfer Office has made available for license its Virtual Room (VRoom) technology, one of the first desktop room-based multimodal interface systems utilizing three-dimensional graphics. The prototype software was developed in the corporation's research program to determine whether application of a "social user interface" to a "room based" environment can enhance the coordination of military command and control. The innovative software could be commercialized and used as an interface for a wide range of applications.

VRoom technology is based on the premise that a three-dimensional, social and human environment is more effective than a two-dimensional computer desktop for people trying to filter and absorb large quantities of information from a variety of sources. VRoom creates a flexible three-dimensional virtual room in which a computer user can run multiple applications and interact with them by placing the applications on the "walls" of the room.

VRoom's architecture supports adding new data sources to its environment, custom 3-D visualization components can be seamlessly integrated, and an intelligent software agent can be configured to filter information, provide alerts or be tasked with accomplishing domain specific jobs. It's most comprehensive visual system, referred to as the Sand Table, has the ability to translate a two-dimensional map into a three-dimensional viewing tool.

MITRE's VRoom technology has commercial and military applications and the company is in the process of exploring licensing opportunities. The goal of the MITRE technology licensing program is to ensure that MITRE technology is broadly applied for the benefit of the corporation's government sponsors and the public. Anyone interested in pursuing a license for VRoom should contact Gerard Eldering, MITRE's Technology Transfer Office Director at (703) 983-7132.

MITRE is a not-for-profit national technology resource that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia.
