Data Mining Tool Helps Analyze Aviation Safety Trends FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Virginia, September 17, 2002 — MITRE has granted a license for its Aviation Safety Data Mining Workbench to AvSoft. The workbench was demonstrated at the 5th international conference of the Global Aviation Information Network held last December. It received such positive feedback from the aviation industry, airlines and international civil aviation authorities, that MITRE sought to transfer the technology into the commercial marketplace. The workbench, which was developed in MITRE's internal research program, allows airlines to search volumes of data to identify safety-related trends and patterns so that air safety officers can formulate appropriate corrective actions. AVSoft plans to provide support for the workbench and make it commercially available in both domestic and international markets as part of soon-to-be-released AVSiS safety event logging and management system. AvSoft's Managing Director Tim Fuller explains, "We will be offering MITRE's Aviation Safety Data Mining Workbench as an option for our new AVSiS 2 software. The great benefit of this software is that it looks for trends or anomalies for the user in a completely objective way." AvSoft, based in the United Kingdom, combines software development, technical support, data research, marketing and administration under one roof, supporting more than 500 customers in 34 countries. MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit national resource that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia. Anyone interested in pursuing a license for available MITRE technologies should contact Gerard Eldering, director of MITRE's Technology Transfer Office at (703) 983-7132.
