McLean, Virginia, July 2, 2002 — MITRE's Technology Transfer Office has signed its first Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Veridian for the VRoom technology, one of the first desktop room-based multimodal interface systems utilizing three-dimensional graphics. Veridian will use VRoom with their Air Defense Simulation Product, and will offer support to government agencies that want to use VRoom for their systems.

VRoom creates a flexible three-dimensional virtual room in which a computer user can run multiple applications and interact with them by placing the applications on the "walls" of the room.

"Veridian is evaluating the VRoom technology for application in the Veridian Air Defense System Simulation Framework (ADSSF) and related Government simulations. ADSSF provides an excellent testing ground for the VRoom concept, since it presents complex real-time data sets in many different forms simultaneously. By inserting the various ADSSF data displays into a more directly intuitive visualization environment, we hope to enhance user comprehension and interaction," said Dave Beck, Veridian vice president of information systems.

"The goal of the MITRE technology transfer program is to ensure that MITRE technology is broadly applied for the benefit of the corporation's government sponsors and the public," according to MITRE Technology Transfer Program Director Gerard Eldering. "We were particularly interested in arranging this CRADA for VRoom because our Air Force sponsor wanted to have the technology supported and integrated into their systems to help their decision-makers work more effectively in command and control situations."
