Gallagher McLean, Virginia, December 17, 2002 — The eCommunities Collaborative Knowledge Management software developed by The MITRE Corporation is now available through a technology transfer agreement with Ensenyo Software. The software, built upon a team portal framework using Java 2 open-source tools and accessible via any standard web browser, allows distributed research teams and organizations to create and deploy virtual community and knowledge-based content web sites at a fraction of the cost and in less time than alternative approaches. eCommunities includes a content management platform with a database for information organization and retrieval, an information center with domain-specific news and information content, a member directory, document and file sharing capability, email lists and forums, discussion groups, and instant messenger capability. In addition, the platform includes a site administration module for rapid configuration, content management, and maintenance. Ensenyo's President and CEO Craig Jeffries, explains, "Almost all organizations now recognize the productivity benefits of web-based knowledge management and collaboration tools. This solution provides a standard, low-cost platform that can be easily configured for a given work team's unique requirements and be fully operational within days." As part of the technology transfer agreement with Ensenyo, MITRE will continue to distribute and sublicense eCommunities for its sponsors, selected U.S. government agencies, and internal use. The Missile Defense Agency, Partnership for Public Warning, Homeland Security, and Critical Infrastructure Protection programs are already using eCommunities to enhance team collaboration and knowledge sharing. Ensenyo will further develop, distribute, and support the product for U.S. government agencies, research institutions, trade organizations, and commercial entities.
