McLean, Virginia, September 12, 2003 — The MITRE Corporation's President and Chief Executive Officer Martin C. Faga recently announced the appointment of Dr. John W. Betz to the position of MITRE Fellow.

The title of fellow is conferred on senior members of the company's technical staff who have made significant contributions to the state of the art in one or more technical disciplines. Dr. Betz has worked extensively on signal processing and its applications, and is an internationally recognized leader in the fields of radio navigation and special communications.

"Dr. Betz' achievements during his 14-year tenure at MITRE have contributed significantly to the evolution of navigation signal design and special communications," said Faga. "His work has had significant impact on the advancement of satellite navigation technology."

During the past several years, Dr. Betz has worked closely with the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System Joint Program Office. He was recently recognized with a MITRE Innovation Award for his work on modulation and signal design for the next generation GPS.

MITRE has appointed only 14 fellows since the position was created in 1962. These individuals are recognized nationally, and often internationally, as experts in their field. They participate broadly in professional and technical societies, are frequently invited to present at key conferences, and have published extensively in refereed journals and other key publications. MITRE Fellows also advise the company’s trustees, officers and managers on vital technical matters.

MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit national resource that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
