Bedford, Massachusetts, May 22, 2003 — The MITRE Corporation has been awarded a $415,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Renewable Energy Trust for design and construction of a new, energy efficient building at their Bedford campus. The three-story, 96,000 sq. ft. building, known as the MITRE Center, will serve as the gateway to the rest of the campus.

"This funding provides an infusion of capital to help businesses take advantage of energy efficiency measures and renewable technologies," said the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) Executive Director Mitchell Adams.

MTC, the development agency for renewable energy and innovation economy in Massachusetts, manages the Renewable Energy Trust as part of the state's strategy to reduce dependence on foreign energy sources. The Trust provides funding for commercial and private construction projects that incorporate renewable energy technologies and environmentally sensitive materials into their design.

MITRE will use its $415,000 grant to subsidize several "green" projects planned for the MITRE Center, including an entrance canopy with 1,200 sq. ft. of embedded photovoltaic solar panels, a 1,700 sq. ft. solar roof that generates 16,900 kilowatt hours of electricity annually; and an interactive educational kiosk in the lobby that will explain, to employees and guests, the technology used and energy generated by these solar arrays. Construction is expected to begin in September 2003 and to be completed by September 2004.

"MITRE's business focuses on innovative research and technology, so it is natural for our corporation to embrace solar technology as a way to promote a healthier environment for our associates and neighbors," said Martin Faga, President and Chief Executive Officer of The MITRE Corporation.

MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit national resource that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass. and McLean, Va.
