The MITRE Corporation Names Dr. Garry M. Jacyna a MITRE Fellow FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Virginia, September 8, 2003 — The MITRE Corporation's President and Chief Executive Officer Martin C. Faga recently announced the appointment of Dr. Garry M. Jacyna to the position of MITRE Fellow. The title of fellow is conferred on senior members of the company's technical staff who have made significant contributions to the state of the art in one or more technical disciplines. Dr. Jacyna, a scientist at MITRE, is nationally known within the undersea warfare community. He has been appointed to numerous blue-ribbon committees and contributed to several important projects, including a critical analysis that helped reconstruct the Russian Kursk disaster. "Dr. Jacyna's achievements during his 15-year tenure at MITRE include the creation and validation of state-of-the-art analytical performance prediction models for ship and submarine sonar systems, which are improving fleet undersea warfare capabilities," said Faga. "In addition, Dr. Jacyna is the Chief Scientist for our multi-year program in netted sensors, where he is developing and directing research in distributed detection, classification, and tracking algorithms. His work has greatly enhanced the technical reputation of the company in these areas." MITRE has appointed only 14 fellows since the position was created in 1962. These individuals are recognized nationally, and often internationally, as experts in their field. They participate broadly in professional and technical societies, are frequently invited to present at key conferences, and have been published extensively in refereed journals and other key publications. MITRE Fellows also advise the company’s trustees, officers and managers on vital technical matters. MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit national resource
that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information
technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research
and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation
Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations
in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
