Washington, D.C., May 11, 2004 — At a special luncheon ceremony today during the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association's (AFCEA's) 2004 TechNet International Conference, three AFCEA International Golden Link Awards were presented to MITRE/Government partnerships.

The Golden Link Awards program recognizes excellence and innovation in the application of technology in government operations. Winners were:

  • Blue Force Tracking — A capability for the commander to track his forces on the battlefield, and provide situational awareness and command and control. Accepting the award were Lieutenant Colonel John Bullington, USA, Blue Force Tracking Product Manager at Ft. Monmouth, NJ; and Bruce Robinson, Lead Operations Research Analyst at MITRE's Ft. Monmouth site.
  • Coalition Chat Line — A Navy initiative to support the coalition warfighter. Using Translingual Instant Messaging (a collaboration application), the Chat Line combines text messaging with automatic machine translation among coalition force languages. Accepting the award were Mr. Chris F. Hillenbrand, USN, Command Science Advisor, U.S. Naval Forces Europe; and Roderick J. Holland, Chief Architect, Multimedia & Collaboration Services for MITRE's Center for Integrated Intelligence Systems.
  • Cursor on Target — An endeavor responding to Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John Jumper's challenge to create a net-centric operational capability from a machine-to-machine vision where "the sum of all wisdom is a cursor over the target." Accepting the award were Colonel Michael G. Therrien, USAF, Command Interoperability Program Office Director, Headquarters, Electronic Systems Center at Hanscom AFB, MA; and Richard J. Byrne, Executive Director (NII) in MITRE's Center for Air Force C2 Systems.

The three winners teamed to demonstrate the technologies that won the awards, at a specially designed "Golden Link Winners" display booth in the TechNet exhibition hall.
