MITRE Announces the Opening of New "Green" Building FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher Bedford, Mass., November 18, 2004 — In a ribbon-cutting ceremony held today, The MITRE Corporation announced the completion of the MITRE Center, a new three-story, 96,000 square foot "green" building on their Bedford campus. The building, which was erected in accordance with standards defined by the U.S. Green Building Council, will serve as the "town square" for the Bedford campus. The MITRE Center houses corporate offices and is the new location for the MITRE Café, the InfoCenter, and the Institute, the corporation's center for education, training, and development. It also features several new meeting spaces with advanced technology. The Immersion Room, for example, features a wraparound video environment, where participants can be "immersed" in images projected onto five screens mounted in a semicircle around the room. "The MITRE Center is intended to be a place where MITRE staff can come together to share ideas, discover new concepts, and demonstrate our work. This building is a bricks and mortar example of MITRE's commitment to our employees, sponsors, and the public interest," said Marty Faga, President and CEO of MITRE. Construction of the MITRE Center began last September following a $415,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Renewable Energy Trust. The grant was used to subsidize several "green" projects at the MITRE Center, including an entrance canopy with 1,200 sq. ft. of embedded photovoltaic solar panels and a 1,700 sq. ft. solar roof that generates 16,900 kilowatt hours of electricity annually. MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit national resource that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
