The MITRE Corporation Offers Airspace Alerting and Avoiding Technology FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Va., February 1, 2004 — The MITRE Corporation's Technology Transfer Office has made its Airspace Alerting and Avoiding technology available for license. This technology alerts pilots of areas of temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) and assists them in revising a flight path to avoid restricted air space. New security concerns have prompted an increasing number of temporary flight restrictions, as well as other types of national security-related airspace restrictions, which have resulted in thousands of violations and warnings issued to pilots. A prototype system created as part of MITRE's research program now provides in-flight updating and enhanced situation awareness for flight crews. This technology is expected to significantly reduce the number and severity of restricted area violations due to navigational or pre-flight planning errors by pilots. The Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) at MITRE funded research into airspace alerting and avoidance prototype systems, with the plan of transferring any resulting technologies to industry and aviation system users. The MITRE technology licensing program ensures that MITRE technology serves the interests of the corporation's government sponsor and the public. Anyone interested in pursuing a license for Airspace Alerting and Avoiding technology should contact Gerard Eldering, director of the Technology Transfer Office at MITRE (703-983-7132). MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit national resource that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
