MITRE Will Maintain Website of Partnership for Public Warning FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher Bedford, Massachusetts, July 15, 2005 — The MITRE Corporation will continue to maintain the Partnership for Public Warning's (PPW) website (www.ppw.us). The site was scheduled to be discontinued following PPW's dissolution in March 2005. However, many individuals in the emergency management community expressed concerns about the loss of access to the site, considered one of the best single sources of information on public warning. Says Sol Glasner, vice president, and general counsel and secretary at MITRE and a former member of PPW's Board of Trustees, "As one of PPW's founding members and a corporation chartered in the public interest, MITRE has decided that the value of the archival information and other resources available through the site warrant preservation." MITRE will periodically add some of the current literature and developments relevant to the public warning community to the site. Items made obsolete by PPW's dissolution will be deleted from the site. Apart from these measures, the website will essentially remain in its pre-dissolution state. The PPW was established with the assistance of The MITRE Corporation as a not-for-profit consortium of industry, government and other organizations committed to saving lives and property by improving the nation's public warning capability. PPW's mission was to develop consensus on processes, standards, and systems in order to ensure that people at risk from terrorism, accidents, and natural disasters receive the right information at the right time so that they can take timely and appropriate action to save lives, reduce loss, and speed recovery. MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia.
