Bedford, Massachusetts, October 19, 2006 — The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce the election of Mr. Richard J. Byrne to vice president and an officer of the Corporation. In this position, Mr. Byrne will continue to lead and direct the Corporation's Air Force work program, working with the senior management team within MITRE's Command and Control Center.

Previously, Mr. Byrne was Executive Director of Innovation and Electronic Systems Center (ESC) Engineering, leading efforts on rapid prototyping and deployment, and providing strategic leadership for both technical and business initiatives.

"Over the years, Rich has made substantial contributions to the discipline of network-centric warfare in support of our Air Force and Department of Defense sponsors," said Mr. Alfred Grasso, MITRE president and chief executive officer.

In 2006, he was presented with the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Meritorious Award for Engineering for championing an enterprise-scalable, machine-to-machine network-centric approach called Cursor on Target (CoT). CoT has allowed Air Force Special Operations forces to reduce their time-sensitive target chain from 30 to less than eight minutes.

Mr. Byrne joined MITRE in 1990 and has held a series of management positions in a range of disciplines, including microelectronics, sensors, communications and networking, information technology, and systems engineering.

He has a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and a master of science degree in electrical engineering and computer science, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
