MITRE Employee Honored as a 2006 Black Engineer of the Year FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Virginia, February 28, 2006 — The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that Thomas Ervin, a principal engineer with the Cyber Analysis and Investigation Department in MITRE's Center for Integrated Intelligence Systems, has been named a 2006 Black Engineer of the Year in the Special Recognition category. Ervin was honored at a February 18th awards breakfast in Baltimore, Md. The awards honor innovators who demonstrate excellence in engineering or science, exemplary leadership in their workplaces and communities, and outstanding work as role models and mentors. The 20th annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference was sponsored by Lockheed Martin Corporation, the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine. Ervin joined MITRE in 1997. His responsibilities include managing and conducting research in computer and cyber forensics and malicious code analysis. He has shared his findings with federal and international law enforcement, academia, industry and technology trade associations, and in discussions around the world. "I am truly humbled to have been recognized as a Black Engineer of the Year," Ervin said. "Over the years, MITRE has offered me so many fun, challenging, and exciting experiences that are oftentimes difficult to call 'work.'" A graduate of Tuskegee University in Alabama, Ervin holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina A&T State University. Prior to joining MITRE, he had a distinguished career as an officer in the U.S. Army. He and his family are based in Olympia, Washington, where he is active in community affairs.
