MITRE Department Head Awarded George Mason University's Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Virginia, June 8, 2006 — The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that Dr. Philip Barry, head of MITRE's Information Discovery and Understanding Department, has received an Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award from the Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering at George Mason University (GMU). The Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award recipients were selected based on student feedback and peer evaluations, and Barry received the award at an April 28th ceremony on George Mason's Arlington campus. An adjunct professor at GMU for six years, Barry has taught Masters-level courses including Systems Design and Integration, Systems Management, Systems Engineering for Design and Development, and Research Methods in Systems Engineering. "This award means a great deal to me as it was based both on my ratings from the students as well as an evaluation from the School of Information Technology," says Barry. "I'm sure that being able to relate real-world experience from my systems engineering work at MITRE is in large part responsible for my success at GMU." "Dr. Barry has repeatedly demonstrated the classic characteristics of a great teacher. He has a skill for relating with his students and instilling them with his high-spiritedness. His students have repeatedly expressed positive comments about his character, his teaching methods, and his ability to bring his vast work experience into his courses," says Dr. Ariela Sofer, chair of George Mason's Systems Engineering and Operations Research Department. At MITRE, Barry is a senior principal information systems engineer leading a department of more than seventy scientists and engineers that supports numerous government sponsors in the areas of data mining, human language technology, information semantics, artificial intelligence, learning systems, and human-centered design. Before coming to MITRE 10 years ago, he developed information architectures for federal government clients and the state of Massachusetts. Barry received his bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Virginia in 1982, his master's degree in systems engineering from George Mason University in 1988, and his Ph.D. in information technology from George Mason University in 1999. MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
