Bedford, Massachusetts, June 26, 2006 — The MITRE Corporation's Dr. Christopher Hegarty, director for spectrum management, recently received Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Hobart Newell Award for his contributions toward the use of the global positioning system (GPS) for civil aviation. The Worcester Polytechnic Institute Electrical and Computer Engineering (WPI ECE) department presents the award each year to honor the outstanding professional contributions of one of its graduates. The award is named for Professor Hobart Newell, a 1918 WPI graduate and professor who was a leader in the early telecommunications revolution.

Professor Fred Looft, head of the WPI ECE department, presented the award to Dr. Hegarty at a May 1 award banquet on WPI's Worcester, Mass., campus. During his remarks at the award ceremony, Professor Looft said, "Dr. Chris Hegarty is truly exemplary among our many successful ECE alumni. His accomplishments in the past decade would have made Hobart Newell a proud man."

Dr. Hegarty received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1990 and 1992, respectively, and his doctorate in electrical engineering from The George Washington University in 1997. He has taught graduate-level courses at The George Washington University and currently teaches courses on GPS for Navtech Seminars. In addition, he has published more than 40 articles on GPS and spread spectrum receiver design and coauthored the textbook Understanding GPS: Principles and Applications.

In 1998 Dr. Hegarty received an Early Achievement Award from the Institute of Navigation (ION), and in 1999 he was a co-recipient of a MITRE President's Award. Both awards recognize Dr. Hegarty's work to improve civil GPS signals. In 2005 he received ION's Johannes Kepler Award for sustained and significant contributions to the development of satellite navigation. He was also a 2005 co-recipient of the U.S. Department of State's Superior Honor Award for his contribution to the agreement between the U.S. and the European community on GPS/Galileo compatibility.
