McLean, Virginia, June 15, 2006 — The MITRE Corporation's recycling program has been honored with a 2006 Fairfax County Business Recycling Excellence Award. The award recognizes businesses, schools, and nonprofit organizations in Fairfax County, Va., that implement innovative waste reduction, recycling, and reuse programs.

"I believe that it is important for MITRE to contribute to the community, and this is clearly one important way we do," said MITRE's Executive Vice President Al Grasso.

Frank Ringel, MITRE's manager of facilities operations, and Sarah Rose, a quality and safety specialist from MITRE's facilities management partner IAP Worldwide Services, accepted the award at the April 29th award ceremony at Northern Virginia Community College's Annandale campus.

In 2005, MITRE expanded its recycling program from white paper, aluminum cans, and toner cartridges to include, among other things, batteries, cell phones, light bulbs, and all types of paper. To increase employee awareness, the recycling program launched a variety of internal communications initiatives, and containers for recyclable materials were placed in MITRE’s conference rooms.

In 2005, MITRE recycled:

  • 97 tons of paper
  • 4.5 tons of cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminum, and styrofoam
  • 4.25 tons of toner cartridges and cellular phones
  • 15.4 tons of computers
  • 1 ton of ballasts and lights
  • 10.5 tons of batteries

MITRE's recycling program recently sent its Bedford and Washington campuses 300 seedlings for employees to take home and plant. The seedlings represent the approximately 300 trees that the company saves per month through its recycling efforts.

MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
