MITRE Wins Massachusetts Statewide Safety Award FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher McLean, Virginia, July 14, 2006 — The MITRE Corporation has received a Statewide Safety Award from the Massachusetts Safety Council, an accredited chapter of the National Safety Council. The Massachusetts Safety Council is a not-for-profit organization that encourages safety, health, and environmental policies designed to prevent and mitigate injuries, illnesses, and economic losses. This is MITRE's second Statewide Safety Award. The awards are part of an annual competition sponsored by the Council for its members, who include over 800 businesses, associations, and individual members throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. To win, members must demonstrate that they have fewer lost workdays due to illness and injury than the national average and the lowest lost workday incidence rate when compared with other members in the same industrial group. "Winning this award reinforces what we've all been working for," says Diana Kroner, MITRE's environmental and occupational safety lead, "a safe and healthy work environment where employees come first. It is the result of a team effort involving many people and departments at MITRE: Health Services, our Risk Manager, Bedford Facilities Operations, and, of course, MITRE's employees." Kroner accepted the award on MITRE's behalf at the Council's annual meeting on June 29. MITRE's proactive loss prevention programs help maintain the company's low incidence of lost workdays. Its ergonomics program includes workstation evaluations, and its self-inspection safety program helps prevent slips and falls by encouraging employees to recognize and report unsafe conditions. MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
