Gallagher McLean, Virginia, March 22, 2007 — The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that MITRE's Director for Spectrum Management, Dr. Christopher Hegarty, has been elected Executive Vice President of the Institute of Navigation (ION) for 2007. Election results were announced at the ION 2007 National Technical Meeting, held January 22–24 in San Diego, Calif. ION is an international nonprofit professional society whose members are interested in position-determining systems. Its approximately 3,000 members include general aviation and airline pilots, professional navigators, astronomers, meteorologists, engineers, surveyors, and mariners. "Participating in organizations like the ION provides us the opportunity to receive peer review of our work from other experts in the field," says Hegarty. "Working with communities of experts also helps us keep abreast of the state-of-the art in technology so that we can best serve our sponsors. For the last 10-15 years, ION has been the premier world-wide organization for experts involved with the Global Positioning System (GPS)." Dr. Hegarty received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1990 and 1992, respectively, and his doctorate in electrical engineering from The George Washington University in 1997. He has taught graduate-level courses at The George Washington University and currently teaches courses on GPS for Navtech Seminars. In addition, he has published more than 40 articles on GPS and spread spectrum receiver design and coauthored the textbook Understanding GPS: Principles and Applications. In 1998 Dr. Hegarty received an Early Achievement Award from ION, and in 1999 he was a co-recipient of a MITRE President's Award. Both awards recognize Dr. Hegarty's work to improve civil GPS signals. In 2005 he received ION's Johannes Kepler Award for sustained and significant contributions to the development of satellite navigation. He was also a 2005 co-recipient of the U.S. Department of State's Superior Honor Award for his contribution to the agreement between the U.S. and the European Community on GPS/Galileo compatibility.
