McLean, Virginia, May 1, 2007 — The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that its work on the Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance Information Service (ISRIS) received first place in the "Outstanding Achievement from the Defense Industry" category at the 2007 Network Centric Warfare (NCW) Awards. The NCW Awards were established to recognize and promote initiatives in the Department of Defense, coalition governments, and defense industry that exemplify network-centric warfare and support information age transformation. Hosted by the Institute for Defense and Government Applications (IDGA), the awards were presented at a banquet held Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC.

MITRE Principal Engineer John Kane, who spearheaded the development of ISRIS, accepted the award on behalf of MITRE. ISRIS is a net-centric information service that provides operationally relevant historical and near real-time video from unmanned aircraft to users in bandwidth-constrained environments.

"This award recognizes ISRIS for its implementation of net-centric warfare constructs in support of the global war on terrorism," says Kane. "While MITRE originated the ISRIS concept and built the prototype, its successful transition to operational capability could not have happened without the support and leadership of the U.S. Joint Forces Command and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense, Networks and Information Integration."

MITRE's ISRIS research has helped the Department of Defense develop next generation Web services that provide real-time situational awareness information and raw sensor data to the user through a generic Internet browser.

"We are only beginning to realize the full potential of the system. Every time a new problem develops, one part of the answer always lies with ISRIS," says Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Plamp, Commander of the 15th Reconnaissance Squadron Predator Operations Center at Nellis Air Force Base.

MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
