MITRE Expands San Diego Site FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MITRE Contacts: Karina H. Wright Eryn L. Gallagher Bedford, Massachusetts, November 14, 2007 — The MITRE Corporation marked the expansion of its San Diego, Ca., site with a ribbon cutting ceremony November 7 at its second location in Point Loma. The company's newest office is in Liberty Station—the recently redeveloped site of the former Naval Training Center. MITRE's San Diego-based employees largely support the U.S. Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) Team and the Joint Program Executive Office (JPEO) for the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS). Mr. Alfred Grasso, MITRE president and chief executive officer, and Mr. David Coomber, director of MITRE's San Diego operations, were joined by Naval officers and public officials at the event. "With the expansion to Liberty Station, MITRE is better equipped to fulfill the current and future needs of the Naval and Joint communities," said Grasso. "It is an honor—and most fitting—to have an office in this historic space." Capt. Frank Unetic, Commanding Officer of SPAWAR, attended the ceremony. "I can always rely on MITRE. Every time I have a problem, I know I can trust MITRE to help—no matter how fast I need it or how tough the problem," said Unetic. Mr. Dennis Bauman, Joint Program Executive Officer, spoke on behalf of the JTRS JPEO. "I am delighted that MITRE is part of my team," he said. "They bring technical expertise and objectivity to JTRS." Mr. Luis Monteagudo, Jr, director of communications for Hon. Greg Cox, vice chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, recognized MITRE as a good neighbor. "San Diego is fortunate to have an employer like MITRE in our midst," said Monteagudo. "Their contributions to national defense and their commitment to their employees make them a model for others to follow." After Monteagudo's remarks, Mr. Peter Gerdeman, MITRE's technical director of Joint Network Radios, unveiled the new sign to a crowd of 130. MITRE established a small site in San Diego in 1980 to support the Navy research and development community, as part of the federally funded research and development center the company operates for the Department of Defense. There were a dozen employees at that time. Nearly three decades later, the site has more than 70 scientists and engineers working on a broad range of initiatives for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and the Joint community. MITRE opened the second location to better serve its sponsors and accommodate its increased workforce. Employees moved into the City of San Diego-owned space in September. MITRE is among several not-for-profit tenants of the mixed-use Liberty Station, which features a large, shared auditorium. MITRE will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2008. For the last six years, the company has been recognized by Fortune Magazine as one of the country's "100 Best Companies to Work For." MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. It operates federally funded research and development centers for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service, with principal locations in Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va.
