McLean, Virginia, December 19, 2007 — Mr. Agam Sinha, Ph.D., senior vice president and general manager of MITRE's Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD), has received the Air Traffic Control Association's (ATCA) 2007 Chairman's Citation of Merit Award. ATCA is a non-profit, non-government, professional organization dedicated to progress in the science of air traffic control and the preservation of a safe flight environment. The Chairman's Citation is presented annually to those who have added to the quality, safety and efficiency of air traffic control.

Sinha has led a variety of research projects and programs for CAASD—a federally funded research and development center MITRE operates for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)—since joining the company in 1972. He received the award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with the ATCA's annual conference and exposition.

"This award reflects Agam's unflagging dedication to solving critical aviation challenges," said Mr. Alfred Grasso, MITRE's president and chief executive officer. "Under his leadership, CAASD has made significant contributions to support the FAA's short- and long-term goals."

Sinha was recognized for his more than three decades of work on numerous initiatives to advance the national airspace system (NAS). Achievements cited include his work on Free Flight Phase 2 and the Operational Evolution Partnership (OEP). Free Flight is the concept of an operating environment in which airspace users have greater freedom in planning and completing flights to reduce costs and enhance the safety and capacity of the NAS. The OEP is the FAA's plan to transform the national air transportation system to meet future demands and avoid gridlock in the sky and in airports.

"ATCA is one of the prominent associations in the air transportation world, with a broad spectrum of aviation stakeholders' membership," said Sinha. "It is indeed a great honor to be recognized by ATCA through the Chairman's Citation of Merit Award. I thank ATCA for this honor. I would also like to thank all my colleagues at MITRE for the support I have received over the years."

Sinha has played a key role in many facets of CAASD's aviation research program, including international air traffic control systems design, airport capacity and delays, system safety activities, and development support for the FAA safety information and analysis system. He has written or co-written more than 80 publications and is a frequent presenter to a wide range of aviation organizations around the world. He recently testified before Congress about airspace capacity issues.

Sinha holds a doctorate in operations research and a master's in industrial engineering from the University of Minnesota. He also holds a master's in technology management from American University and a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

MITRE (www.mitre.org) is a not-for-profit company that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government.
